Plant description | Multistemmed shrub to 5 m, up to 10 cm in diameter. Bark pale brown covered in stinging spines. Bark slash shows a clear sap, and the slash oxidises brown. Petiole to 34 cm long, lamina to 45 x 32 cm. Petiole and abaxial venation covered in fine stinging spines. Inflorescences either cauliflorous or in leaf axil. Ants were found crawling all over the shrub. |
Locality and habit remarks | Disturbed, tropical, lowland, evergreen, mid-Magdalena type rainforest on karst. Growing in a small very light open river gorge, in coarse sandy soil right on the river bank. Very few tall trees were growing in the immediate vicinity. Found at La Mullata river 100 meters upstream from the bridge crossing la Mullata river on the road to Rio Claro reserve. |
